Amazon Rain Forest Tour Itineraries

IQUITOS TRAVEL offers several multi-day jungle tours to various destinations in Loreto. At the moment, we offer expeditions to Amazon rainforest reserves like Pacaya Samiria, Allpahuayo Mishana and Tamshiyacu Tahuayo. Each reserve has its own ecological characteristics, but all are great to view the regional wildlife. We will take you on exciting boat and canoe rides on the many rivers and lakes, in search of monkeys, anaconda, caiman, piranha, jaguars, ocelots, tapir and sloths, parrots and countless other bird species. Join us on jungle hikes by day and by night and experience the majesty and wonder of the virgin rainforest. Here are some examples, but we are flexible. If you want to combine different destinations, let's talk!

Yarapa River

3-, 4-, or 5-day deep jungle tour in the pristine rain forest of the Yarapa River

The Yarapa River, at about 4 hours travel from Iquitos, is known for its rich flora and fauna. Recently, we have added this exciting excursion to our itinerary, because it allows us to give you a full primary rainforest experience in half the time you would need elsewhere.

On your way by boat, while you cruise down four different rivers (the Marañon, the Amazon, the Ucayali and the Yarapa), dolphin spotting is guaranteed, and you will see many different species of birds and butterflies, even before you arrive at your destination!

Our guide Lobo was born here and grew up on the Yarapa River. During your stay here, he will take you on exciting jungle expeditions, walking tours by day and by night, canoe trips, fishing for piranhas, and deep into the rainforest. Lobo has the sharpest eyes and ears and will help you spot a large variety of jungle animals, reptiles, insects and amphibians, while teaching you about medicinal plants and the traditional culture.

We don´t have a set program or schedule, so we are also open to hear your special wishes and requests. For example, we can take you on survival treks as far as to the border with Brazil!

Pacaya Samiria
National Reserve

5-day deep jungle tour in the primary rain forest of the famous Pacaya Samiria Reserve

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is the single most important destination for visitors to Iquitos: the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. In 1982, the Peruvian Government established the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve with the purpose of preserving the wilderness resources and the beautiful landscapes of the area. The Reserve has an area of 8,042 square miles, which represents 1.5% of the total surface of Peru.

The name of Pacaya Samiria comes from the names of two rivers that run through it: Pacaya and Samiria. The Reserve has a great diversity of wildlife as well as aquatic life. Threatened or endangered species that can be found in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve are the jaguar, the black alligator, the giant river otter, the manatee, four different species of primates and two different species of turtles.

The Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is located south from the confluence of the Marañon and the Ucayali rivers, the point where the Amazon river is formed. We will travel to Nauta by car or bus. Nauta is located on the north bank of the Marañon. From Nauta, we travel by boat into the reserve.

Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve

2-day, 1 night tour into the Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve

The Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve is relatively close to Iquitos. We will travel by boat up the Nanay River and visit villages like Santa Clara and Llanchama. Here you will meet the locals, visit their houses and get to know their way of life.

One of our friends here will show you a large variety of local fruits -which you get to taste and take with you- as well as a number of medicinal plants. She will explain their functions and give a demonstration of how these medicines are harvested, prepared and applied.

Then, two of the men will take you on a long hike into the virgin rainforest. Here, for the first time, you will experience what it is like to be surrounded by the centuries old forest, with all of its sights, sounds and smells. Learn about the plants and trees, and find all kinds of animals, insects, amphibians, reptiles and birds.

If water levels allow, we will take you on canoe rides, by day and by night, on the river and the cochas, under the open sky, as well as in the flooded rainforest. We will camp outside and take nightly walks. We will also go fishing, swimming, bird watching and canoeing. You may even catch your own lunch or dinner!

I'm another title
Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve

3-, 4-, or 5-day deep jungle tour in the pristine rain forest of the Yarapa River. With  genuine ayahuasca ceremony

The 322,500 hectare Reserva Comunal de Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo was officially established by the regional government of Loreto, Peru, in 1991, and was unofficially protected for a decade before 1991 by the wisdom of the community organization. It is part of a 2,000,000 acre area proposed to be called the Zona Reservadad del Yavari that wouldextend to the Yavari River on the border of Brazil. The reserve is in the fertile upland forest which separates the valley of the Amazon River from the valley of the Yavari River.

The great news for us is that 97,580 hectares in an area on both sides of the Tahuayo River was added to the reserve in 2007. The area is a wonderful piece of rainforest that includes many lakes. The addition along the Tahuayo River upstream of the Blanco River makes our cruise even more attractive.

What is it that makes the 420,080 hectare reserve, newly named the Area de Conservacion Regional Comunal Tamshiyacu Tahuayo, so unique? Is it the fourteen species of primates living within the reserve, the most in any protected area of the world? Or that the reserve is home to an amazing 500 bird species?
